Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Shaped our Contemporary Globe
There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that title should go to the automated timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks working for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber might be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, which converted timber into boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch could build vessels faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic and cultural dominance in the continent and the globe.
The Original True Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first authentic factory machine.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part converted the circular motion to up-and-down action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed the spinning motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the log toward the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Every component was modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them so the machine acted in a precisely synchronized order, cutting with each downward motion while advancing on every upward motion. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental parts.”
