The Princess of Wales's Yearly Festive Service of Carols Honours Charity Helpers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.
The large audience will hear a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The central message of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the carol service.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Music and Opportunity
Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians aided by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been helped by the charity, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the evening's event.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Sisterly Duo
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.
Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."
This annual carol service will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
